Research is focused on the design of Molecules for biomedical, agricultural and environmental applications. The improvement of Synthetic Methods granting the sustainable chemistry concept is a common factor to all synthetic procedures.

Several classes of molecular frameworks such as hydroxypyridinones and porphyrins, are functionalized with chemical groups to produce molecules whose physicochemical properties are fine-tuned according to the application in view. Examples are fluorescent chelators to monitor and sensing metal ions in body fluids and natural waters, anticancer, antimalarial, antimicrobial and novel anti-inflammatory drug candidates.

Hydroxypyridinones and porphyrins possess excellent chelating properties and the group synthesizes a variety of metal ion complexes that also find application in the biomedical and agriculture fields.

The characterization of the molecules produced is performed in the solid state and in solution, using several spectroscopic methods. Speciation studies in aqueous solution are particularly important for all the fields of application.
